The text search engine allows queries to be formed from arbitrary Boolean expressions containing the keywords AND, OR, and NOT, and grouped with parentheses. For example:
- John Smith
- finds documents containing 'John' or 'Smith'
- John or Smith
- same as above
- John and Smith
- finds documents containing both 'John' and 'Smith'
- John not Smith
- finds documents containing 'John' but not 'Smith'
- (John not Smith) and Jones
- finds documents containing 'Jones', plus 'John' but not 'Smith'
- web*
- finds documents containing words starting with 'web'
